This is a seldom found 1873 Hawksley’s Monaural Stethoscope. It is pictured and described in Keith Wilbur’s book “Antique Medical Instruments”. Hawksley used Brass with Nickel Plating and Gutta Percha instead of wood for the next generation of Monaural Steathoscopes. It has the seldom found dual extension that could be placed directly on patient’s chest or for ladies slid down the chest for diagnosis. This treasure is made of brass with nickel plating with rare and seldom found Gutta Percha ear piece. Extention has light wear and shows where the original Doctor may have wrapped metal extension with a strap to wear around their neck. This rarely found treasure in excellent condition for 125+ years of age. Size is 6” in length; ear piece is 2.50 in diameter; bell is 1.25” in diameter. Most were made of wood and it is very rare to find a stethoscope made of brass metal with Gutta Percha ear piece. History preserves that in 1816 Rene’ Laennec invented the first stethoscope made of a wood tube to listen to the hearts of patients and was called a Monaural Stethoscope. Many variations this Monaural evolved until in the 1851 when a dual ear piece Stethoscope was designed and invented by Arthur Leared and they were called a Binaural Stethoscope. This treasure will accent any collection of antique stethoscopes.
