This is a rare Tooth Key with Ivory handle and steel business end and two, 2, extra claws. It is stamped Dyer Plymouth. William Dyer and sons were premier makers of medical items from 1823 to 1890s at Old Town Street in Plymouth. The Ivory handle has a beautiful patina. Notice too the seldom found round bolster to lock on tooth while claw digs in for removal. It was designed by the famous medical French designer "clé de Garengeot" in 1770. The instrument is made of non plated steel and hand carved Ivory handle. It is pictured and described in the book “Antique Dental Instruments” by Bennion. Over all condition is very good. Size 6 inches long x 3.75 inch handle. For 150+ years of age, this rare treasure is in very good condition and will highlight any collection of old dental instruments.
