This rare treasure is a 1980 Heart Pacemaker by Ventak ICD model 1600 S/N 631073 that has been encased in a wood display case. It was made by Cardiac Pacemakers Inc in St Paul, MN. Note the secrets to all Pacemakers or the Capacitor. In this early Ventak model, there are two, 2, large old type cylindrical capacitors. Note also the wiring board that uses large resistors and other electrical components before small Integrated Circuits. This was a display model to show patient internal operation to save their life. It was one of the first internal planted models called “implantable cardioverter defibrillator” or ICD. This model as well as others had many problems. The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery published “A recent case of ours illustrates an extreme consequence of patch crinkling. A patient with dilated cardiomyopathy and chronic atrial fibrillation, now 58 years old, had first undergone placement of an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) at an outside hospital in 1989. At that time a Ventak 1600 AICD device (Cardiac Pacemakers, Inc., St. Paul, Minn.) had been connected to two epicardial patches and to two epimyocardial screw-in type electrodes. All electrodes were placed via a subxiphoid approach. How the patches were secured could not be determined from the old records. The device was replaced by . . .”. babble, babble the above and other articles state a high rate of failure for this model and suggest they be replaced. The device size is 4” x 2.50 x 1”. The wood showcase is 6” x 5” x 4”. The devices saved many lives and continued incredible improvements. Collectors will find this a highlight to their collection of medical life saving devices.
