This instrument is called a Luer’s Ecraseur for removing polyp or tumor growths and sometimes testicles that dates from 1870 - 1890. This instrument was designed by Linéaire de Chassaignac a great French Surgeon of the XIX Century. Instrument is made of steel with nickel plating. It has some loss of nickel plating, but in good display and operational condition. The chain would be placed around the growth and top handle turned tightening chain until growth was squeezed / cut off. Chassaignac's ECRASEUR (named after its designer), the Ecraseur (from a French word meaning, "to crush") was designed to remove tumors, masses and other large growths. The ratcheting handle would slowly tighten the chain around the mass until it was removed by lacerating the tissue rather than cutting it, greatly reducing the danger of hemorrhage. A similar screw type “Ecraseur” is illustrated in a 1800s Weiss Catalog and another in a Gemrig Catalog of the same period. Size 11” long with 6” chain when extended. This terrifying instrument will highlight anyone’s collection of old medical surgery instruments.
