This is a beautiful Compass in mahogany wood case with brass hinges that dates to late 1700s to middle 1800s. It is in good operating condition with a fleur-de-lis paper insert design. Needle locks when cover is closed. It is unsigned. Thomas Jefferson had a similar compass and it can be found in the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation Museum display at Monticello Museum in Virginia. The Smithsonian Museum Store offers a reproduction of this nearly one of a kind instrument Called “The Thomas Jefferson Compass”. This is an original and NOT a reproduction.
